Friendship Tutoring begins its 10th year on Sunday, September 7, 2008. The program meets every Sunday during fall semester (Sept 7 through Dec 7 except for Nov 23 and 30) and spring semester (Jan 11, through April 26 (except for March 8,15, and April 26). Anyone interested in driving or helping with the program is welcome.
Friendship Tutoring meets each Sunday afternoon between 3:00-5:00 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters. It does not meet during the summer. Sixty elementary school age children, including siblings of the Park Forest Day Nursery, are enrolled in these sessions. Penn State students and church members tutor the youngsters engaging in language arts, math, science, and social studies activities. Computers with appropriate software are available and a variety of board games encourage the use of academic skills. Each child participates in reading activities as well as journal writing during the sessions, and a nutritious snack is served at the opening of the afternoon. Drivers provide transportation for some students to and from each session. If interested in participating in the tutoring program as a volunteer or if you would like more information, please e-mail the Director Laura Griffin at lpgriffin@verizon.net.
Business and organization partners (supporters) for Friendship Tutoring Program are the First Book Program, Centre County Community Foundation, The Pennsylvania College of Technology, State College Woman's Club, The Schreyer Family Foundation, Harcourt, Inc., and Wegmans Food Market. Their support has been and continues to be invaluable.
