Reaching out beyond our own walls is an important part of the life of Faith UCC. Our people are involved in, and we financially support a number of local ministries, including Interfaith Mission and its Fuel Assistance program, the Food Bank, Park Forest Day Nursery, Meals on Wheels and United Campus Ministry, the ecumenical Protestant Ministry at Penn State.
We also financially support wider reaching ministries such as Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM), Neighbors in Need and One Great Hour of Sharing. We support denominational institutions such as Homewood Homes, Lancaster Theological Seminary, and Church World Service's special offerings to support disaster relief. We participate in the annual CROP and Habitat for Humanity and AIDS Project walks. In addition, we have actively participated in our Penn Central Conference partnerships with the German UKU of the Rhineland and Berlin/Brandenburg regions, and the UCC Dakota Association of native American churches.
In addition, our building is frequently used by a variety of groups and organizations that have no space of their own. Several community musical groups take advantage of our wonderful sanctuary acoustics for their concerts throughout the year.
The church also operates the Friendship Tutoring Program. Since its founding in 1999, it has grown from 8 children to over 65 elementary students. Penn State students and church members tutor the children, engaging in language arts, math, science and social studies activities. A computer lab with appropriate software is available and a variety of board games encourage the use of academic skills. Each child participates in reading activities as well as journal writing during the sessions and a nutritious snack is served at the opening of the afternoon. Drivers and parents provide transportation to and from each session.First Book continues to provide book grants and Barnes & Noble provides holiday book gifts. The Fall term operates from September to early December and the Spring term operates from late January through early May.
